How Can I Be A Resource For You?
An open letter to our real estate community. Times are getting tough for our CRE community. Let's help one another.
An open letter to the real estate investment and development community.
In last week’s newsletter, we focused on how to rebuild stronger after a setback. Everyone experiences setbacks. They are a natural part of our careers.
Sadly, in today’s market, they are more prevalent. I recognize that real estate investment, especially development, is in a tough place now.
Companies are laying people off and professionals may not see the opportunities they expect to see when they hit the job market.
In the real estate press, such as The Real Deal and Hiten Samtani’s newsletter Ten31, there is one tragic story after another.
Vividly remembering what that feels like, I want to serve as a resource for those in their careers that are building or re-building.
Reach out if you want to connect with me. I’m here to help you, our readers, in any way I can.
So today, I’m writing to you, our community of real estate professionals, architects, engineers, brokers, development managers, and entrepreneurs, to let you know I’m available to talk, share ideas, or to just network.
Maybe you are considering a change or looking to connect with someone new? Or maybe you have an idea you’d like to explore?
In fact, below is my Calendly link. If you would like to set a time to connect for 30 minutes, feel free to chose a time.
I know it’s scary.
When I left a big development shop I started having “What’s next?“ conversations with my network.
A few friends offered to connect me with other big development shops and introduce me to some new people. That was a big help and allowed me to gain valuable perspective.
One thing that led to meeting new business partners was a commitment to supporting the causes I believe in. I am a big supporter of creating sustainable, walkable communities.
So when I met with the director of a non-profit and told her what I was up to, she thought to introduce me to a potential business partner. This led to us working together, and the rest is history.
Knowing how valuable those connections can be, I want to help.
If you’re not in this situation, I’m glad for you, but I encourage you to do the same. Offer to chat with a friend.
To those in the midst of the struggle, keep in mind that as much as these stumbling blocks can throw us off balance, they can also bring clarity. They can encourage us to reflect on our definition of success and whether it still aligns with our current priorities.
Please remember that the best opportunities arise in the toughest times. It is always darkest before dawn.
Cheers to those figuring things out. John

In the NBA we are seeing some of the best action of the year. Unfortunately the Milwaukee Bucks have lost 3 of their top players to injury. Indiana leads the series now 3-1.
The Timberwolves eliminate the Suns from the Playoffs with a massive thumping. There is now speculation about the future of Kevin Durant and Coach Vogel with the organization.
The Magic and the Cavs are tied up at 2-2 in their series. They have a shot, but the Cavs have looked strong. The Magic will have to more consistently put up big points to win.
The Celtics now have a 2-1 lead in their series with the Heat. They are the favorite to win the championship this year.
Denver leads their series with the Lakers 3-1. They have been strong and appear to be rolling to the next round where they would play the Timberwolves. What a match up!
I’m excited to see who gets eliminated this week and who moves on. How about you? Who do you have winning it all? John
What We Are Reading This Week From Half-Court!
I had a great conversation today with a friend and colleague. He is looking for new opportunities. It was great to reconnect. I made a few suggestions and he is probably going to help out on a consulting project with my partners and I. Let me know.
